Newer Construction Does Not Always Eliminate Environmental Concerns
What it is
Property owners sometimes assume newer materials eliminate asbestos concerns. Building age alone should not be used as the sole basis for determining whether testing is necessary. Renovations often involve multiple generations of building materials, and older materials may remain concealed behind newer finishes.
Where it's found
Buildings frequently contain materials from multiple renovation periods. Even when visible finishes appear newer, older materials may remain concealed beneath flooring, walls, ceilings, roofing systems, or other building components.
When and why
Additions and remodeling projects frequently contain a mixture of materials from different eras. Newer overlays often sit directly on older flooring, roofing, and siding that was never removed.
How it's tested
Professional evaluation helps identify potential concerns before renovation or demolition activities begin. Sampling is targeted to the specific materials to be disturbed.
