Asbestos-cement siding (often called transite) was widely used on residential and commercial buildings through the 1970s. It is typically a hard, brittle panel or shingle that is durable when intact but can release fibers when broken, cut, or pressure-washed.
Where it's found
Exterior walls of homes, garages, and outbuildings throughout Western Massachusetts. Frequently encountered during siding replacement, repainting, and exterior renovation projects.
When and why
Most asbestos-cement siding dates from the 1940s through the late 1970s. Newer vinyl or fiber-cement siding may have been installed over older asbestos siding without removing it.
How it's tested
Bulk samples are collected from intact siding pieces using wet methods and PPE. PLM analysis with point counting where indicated.
