Where it's found
Bedroom, living room, and hallway ceilings in homes built or renovated from the 1950s through the late 1970s. Common in mid-century ranches and split-levels across the Pioneer Valley.
When and why
Federal regulations banned asbestos in spray-applied surfacing materials in 1978, but installers continued to use existing inventory into the early 1980s. Testing is the only way to confirm.
How it's tested
A small bulk sample (roughly the size of a quarter) is collected using wet methods to prevent fiber release, then analyzed by PLM with point counting if results are near the regulatory threshold.
