Pre-1980 steam and hot-water pipe insulation, boiler jackets, and elbow fittings frequently contained amosite, chrysotile, or a mix. Damaged pipe wrap is one of the most friable, and highest-risk, asbestos materials in older homes.
Where it's found
Basements, mechanical rooms, crawl spaces, and utility closets in pre-1980 residential and commercial buildings. Especially common in Holyoke, Springfield, and other Western Massachusetts communities with old steam-heat systems.
When and why
Common from the 1920s through the 1970s. Even where the original system has been removed, residual elbow fittings and mudded joints often remain.
How it's tested
Samples are collected from each homogeneous area (straight runs, elbows, joints) with wet methods and full PPE. PLM analysis with point counting on trace results.
